Bharathiraja passes away at 84; Tamil cinema mourns a legend; Khushbu Sundar recalls unfulfilled dream

Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, one of the most influential directors in the history of Tamil cinema, has passed away at the age of 84. The celebrated director reportedly breathed his last at his Chennai residence in the early hours of Wednesday following age-related health complications.The Indian Express reports suggest that his health had been declining in recent months, particularly after the sudden demise of his son Manoj in 2025.

A filmmaker who changed Tamil cinema

Bharathiraja is widely credited with bringing realism and rural life to mainstream Tamil cinema. At a time when studio-based productions dominated the industry, he chose to tell stories rooted in villages and everyday life.His breakthrough came with the 1977 classic ’16 Vayathinile’. The film is regarded as a landmark in Tamil cinema and paved the way for a new style of storytelling.His filmography includes memorable works such as Muthal Mariyathai and several other acclaimed productions. Throughout his career, he received numerous honours, including six National Film Awards and the Padma Shri.

Khushbu Sundar pays emotional tribute

Among the many celebrities who mourned his passing was actress and politician Khushbu Sundar. She shared an emotional note remembering her association with the filmmaker. Taking to social media, Khushbu wrote, “Devastated to know that our most beloved, loved and respected Director, the legendary #BharathiRaaja avl is no longer with us. His demise is a gloomy cloud in tamil cinema. His films have been bench marks and shall continue to be the actual school of film making. He leaves behind a huge legacy for every cinema lover. He always said let’s do a film with me in 2 pigtails. That shall remain an unfulfilled dream. Will miss you a lot Sir. Rest in peace. Om Shanti #BharathiRaaja #eniniyaiyakkunare.”

Director Arun Matheswaran also shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Bharathiraja as much more than a filmmaker. He wrote, “We’ve lost more than a filmmaker. We’ve lost a man who lived and breathed cinema. He didn’t just make films, he redefined Tamil cinema, again and again. A true stalwart, fearless, endlessly curious, and one of the greatest to ever hold a camera. I’ll carry forever the privilege of directing him in my first film. Watching him work, you understood what it meant to love cinema more than anything else in the world. He inspired generations.
