'Varanasi' update: Writer Vijayendra Prasad hints at major Ramayana scene; 'War between Rama and Kumbhakarna'

SS Rajamouli’s upcoming film ‘Varanasi’ continues to remain one of the most awaited projects among movie lovers. The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles. Ever since its first glimpse was unveiled, audiences were already actively discussing about the possible plot and also it’s mythological links.Writer Vijayendra Prasad has now shared new details during an interaction session.

‘Varanasi’ writer teases major Ramayana sequence

During an open house session hosted by Filmy Focus, Vijayendra Prasad was asked about a sequence that he had spoken about earlier. The sequence had already become a talking point among fans.When asked whether the much-discussed 30-minute portion was linked to mythology, politics or spirituality, he responded, “It’s a war between Rama and Kumbhakarna.”Vijayendra Prasad further spoke about certain visuals that audiences had already seen earlier. He hinted that clues might already exist in the promotional material.He said, “You saw in the trailer, right? You saw Rama and Kumbhakarna. You saw Lord Hanuman’s tail and a chariot on it. I’m talking about that…spellbound.”He did not continue discussing the scene and stopped before revealing additional information. Another question later touched upon the possibility of time zones being part of the film’s story. Vijayendra Prasad chose not to explain further and simply said, “We shouldn’t talk about it anymore.”

‘Varanasi’ features Mahesh Babu in the role of Rudhra. Priyanka Chopra plays Mandakini while Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays Kumbha.The project is being directed by SS Rajamouli. The film is currently progressing through production stages. The makers are targeting a theatrical release during Sankranti 2027.Prithviraj Sukumaran opens up about his challenging roleEarlier, Prithviraj Sukumaran had spoken about his experience of playing Kumbha in the film. He explained that the role pushed him into a different acting space.According to the actor, performers generally depend on body language along with expressions during scenes. He revealed that this role changed that process significantly.Prithviraj told Collider, “always aware that your body is available as a communication tool. Then you are put in a situation where nothing from the neck down is visible, and you realize that whatever you do physically will not be seen.”He further added, “Everything you have at your disposal is concentrated on your face. What you need to convey must come through your face and eyes.”Speaking about the role, he also shared that the complexity made the character even more interesting for him. Prithviraj concluded by saying, “Definitely one of the most complex characters Rajamouli sir has conceived.”‘Varanasi’ is currently under production and remains one of the most awaited releases in the coming years.
