‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ heads to OTT

‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ heads to OTT: Lauren Montgomery says the movie ‘deserves to be seen on a big screen’

Director Lauren Montgomery has officially wrapped production on ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’, but the celebration comes with a special note. The animated film, which marks the first feature in the Avatar franchise, will now premiere on OTT after its theatrical release was cancelled, a decision that, according to Montgomery, doesn’t question the quality of the film.

What did Lauren Montgomery say?

Montgomery took to social media to mark the end of what she described as a four-year journey. In her Instagram post, she reflected on the experience of working on an Avatar project, calling it never easy but entirely worth it, and expressed great pride in everything the team had created together.Montgomery made it clear that the shift from theatres to streaming should not be mistaken for a lack of quality. She wrote that the film deserves to be seen on a big screen and that the streaming move had nothing to do with how the movie turned out. According to her, the film is “amazing” and she remains hopeful that audiences will appreciate it whenever they do get to see it.

Here’s what Lauren Montgomery exactly wrote:

“Aang movie is officially wrapped. We screened the final film for the crew and celebrated the end of a 4 year journey. Now it waits in limbo until its release in October. I’ve never worked on an Avatar project that was easy and this was no different. But it was worth it. I’m so proud of everyone who was a part of this and the amazing thing we built together. The movie is amazing!!! That might not mean much coming from the director. I might have some bias, but I feel the need to put that out there. The recent decision to move us from theatrical to streaming might give the impression that the quality wasn’t sufficient, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. This movie deserves to be seen on a big screen!!! Can’t wait for you all to see it!Also, I’m terrible at taking pictures, but I managed to remember to take a few over the course of the night.”

Why was ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’s theatrical release cancelled?

The film was first announced with a theatrical release date of October 10, 2025, under the title ‘Aang: The Last Airbender’. April 2024 brought the first delay, shifting the date to January 30, 2026, and the film quietly got a new title along the way, becoming ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’. Just when it seemed like things were settling, May 2025 brought yet another setback, moving the theatrical date to October 9, 2026. Finally, in December 2025, the studio shut the door on a cinematic release altogether and moved the film to streaming on Paramount+.Around the same time, a new animated series, ‘Avatar: Seven Havens,’ was also greenlit for OTT, which already hosts the original ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ series, all four seasons of ‘The Legend of Korra’, and the 2010 live-action film.
