Song lyrics of the day by Shakira: Breaking down ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’

“You’re a good soldier, choosing your battlesPick yourself up and dust yourself off, get back in the saddleYou’re on the frontline, everyone’s watchingYou know it’s serious, we’re getting closer, this isn’t overThe pressure’s on, you feel itBut you got it all, believe itWhen you fall, get up, oh, ohAnd if you fall, get up, eh, ehTsamina mina zangalewa, ’cause this is Africa.”

Meaning of the song’s lyrics

The song, ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),’ held the title of being the official anthem of the FIFA World Cup 2010. Under the theme of resilience and courage, the lyrics were meant to give a wake-up call to the football players to believe and play for their time, despite the setbacks. Success and failure do not define who you are; it’s about how you deal with them. Rather than being discouraged and disappointed, it is important to move forward with all the bruises and knowledge. The lyrics also talk about pressure due to peers and viewers, which might be nerve-racking during the game. However, it is important to trust yourselves and believe in the skills you possess. There are highs and lows, but you just have to sail your ship until you touch the coast gracefully. The phrase ‘Tsamina mina zangalewa’ is the African chant that questions where you are from, emphasising the roots and a sense of unity.
