Sonam Bajwa: I’ve learned from my mistakes

Sonam Bajwa is a name to reckon with when it comes to Punjabi films for over 10 years, she has been part of many successful films, worked with the biggest of stars there and has also done even women-led films there. For the longest time fans were wondering when she will head to Bollywood and now in the past few months she has been seen in three Hindi films from Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 to Baaghi 4 with Tiger Shroff to Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat with Harshvardhan Rane.

In an exclusive interview with ETimes which she gave a couple of years ago, she had opened up if she was limiting herself to Punjabi cinema , she said “We all learn, right? And I think I’m somebody who’s learned so much from my mistakes, from the decisions that I’ve made. But I’m happy. It made me stronger and wiser. So, I can’t just pinpoint one thing. One thing that I know and I take from all those experiences, from all the opportunities that I let go of or the opportunities I couldn’t take is that maybe I was not ready and I was not meant to do them. I’ve had several opportunities from not just Bollywood but even from the South. I couldn’t take them for several reasons. Sometimes there are no dates. Sometimes you feel that maybe this is not right for me, for my debut. We all do things according to our understanding. Sometimes it’s right. Sometimes later you think, I wish I had done it. So, I’ve had all those moments.”

“ But what I do believe is that when God has something for you, when something is meant for you, it will happen. So, I think it hasn’t happened yet other than Punjab, maybe because God is preparing me for something big and awesome. And all these years I have worked on myself, my craft, on every possible thing that I could as an actor. And not that I’ll get a big opportunity or something like that. I genuinely love being an actor. I want to grow as an actor. I want to, wherever God has kept me, for now it’s Punjabi industry and I’m very very proud working there. I just want to do the best of the work in my capacity. Not saying that I should get a big budget film or that I should work with bigger stars. I’ve worked with all the stars. I’ve done female-led stories. I just want to do good work. And now people expect a lot out of me. So, for my fans, whether I work in Punjab, South India or here, I want to do good work. And I think one of the reasons I held back for just jumping onto any opportunity was also because I feel a little responsible. I feel that fans expect a lot so I can’t do anything” she added.

Her words about “God preparing her for something big and awesome” now sound almost prophetic. Sonam Bajwa was never limiting herself to Punjabi films; she was building her foundation there.
