She defied her Muslim family, quit fame for inter-faith marriage

THIS actress went against her conservative Muslim family to work, received blood letters from fans, and walked away from stardom for inter-faith marriage

Aamna Sharif, a prominent figure in Indian entertainment, overcame conservative family expectations to pursue her acting dreams. She gained fame on television in the 2000s, navigated intense fan reactions, and later prioritized family life, marrying film producer Amit Kapoor and having a son. After a break, Aamna returned to acting, embracing new roles in television and web series.

Aamna Sharif’s journey in the entertainment industry is a story of courage, resilience, and choices that went against the grain. Rising to fame in the 2000s as one of Indian television’s most loved faces, she battled conservative family expectations, faced extreme fan reactions, and eventually stepped away from stardom for love and family.

Early life and family struggles

Aamna was born on July 16, 1982, in Mumbai to an Indian father and a Persian-Bahraini mother. In a recent interview with Hindi Rush, she opened up about her family struggles, sharing that she always wanted to become an actor but grew up in a very conservative Muslim household. After her father’s early passing, she was raised by her mother alone. The actress shared with Hindi Rush that no one in her family ever imagined a career in acting. Due to circumstances, she had to put her dream on hold for a while and even worked at a boutique to support her education.

From modeling to television stardom

Sharif began her career with modeling, advertisements, and music videos before making a mark in television and films. She appeared in popular music videos for artists like Kumar Sanu, Falguni Pathak, and Daler Mehndi. Her journey started while she was still in college, when she received an offer for an advertisement. Though her mother was initially against the idea, Aamna managed to convince her after months of persistence, even as the decision went against the wishes of their conservative family.

Family fallout

Her family stopped speaking to her for two years after she pursued acting. During this time, she worked in music videos and ads, which led to an audition with Ekta Kapoor and marked the start of her TV career. Her mother’s support remained a constant through it all. After the success of Kahiin To Hoga in 2007, Aamna ventured into Bollywood with films like Aloo Chaat, Aao Wish Karein, and Shakal Pe Mat Ja. However, these films failed commercially. She returned to television with Hongey Judaa Na Hum opposite Raqesh Bapat, but the show struggled with low TRPs and went off the air within six months.

Hiatus, marriage, and family life

In 2013, she stepped away from the limelight and married her longtime boyfriend, film producer Amit Kapoor. The couple welcomed their son, Arain, in 2015. They often share glimpses of their family life on social media, celebrating both Karwa Chauth and Eid, reflecting their embrace of Hinduism and Islam. After a six-year hiatus following her marriage, Aamna returned to television in 2019 with Ekta Kapoor’s Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2, a reboot of the 2001 hit show. She took on the iconic role of antagonist Komolika Chaubey, originally played by Urvashi Dholakia, replacing Hina Khan. In 2022, she appeared in two web series: Damaged Season 3 on Hungama Play and Aadha Ishq on Voot Select.
