Shakti Kapoor recalls how Vinod Khanna gave him a home

Shakti Kapoor recalls how Vinod Khanna gave him a home; reveals how a road accident with Feroz Khan led to Qurbani, ‘I was struggling and broke’

Much before Qurbani turned Shakti Kapoor into a household name, the actor was battling anonymity in Bombay. Roles were scarce, money even scarcer, and the future uncertain. Looking back in a recent conversation with AlphaNeon Studioz, Shakti admitted that he was barely managing in a city that gives little room to those on the margins.“Qurbani was the film that made me who I am today. That film completely changed my life,” he said, underscoring how pivotal the project was.

Living on borrowed kindness

At the time, Shakti Kapoor was staying at Vinod Khanna’s home as a paying guest—but even that arrangement was fragile. “I didn’t even have enough money to pay the rent,” he revealed. When Vinod Khanna realised the extent of his struggle, he stepped in quietly. “When Vinod Khanna found out how much I was struggling, he offered us a house in Juhu that was empty so I could stay there,” Shakti recalled, calling it a moment that restored his dignity when he had almost nothing.

The Fiat that changed his fate

A calendar shoot helped Shakti scrape together enough money to buy a second-hand Fiat for Rs 11,000. Ironically, it was this very car that steered him towards his breakthrough.“I was driving on Linking Road when a Mercedes came from behind and hit my car,” he said. With no savings and no backup, panic quickly turned into anger.

‘I didn’t even have money to eat’

“I was furious, I didn’t even have money for food, let alone to fix this car,” Shakti admitted. He stormed out, ready to confront the driver—only to freeze when he saw who it was.“The man stepping out was six-foot-two and it was Feroz Khan,” he said. In that instant, frustration gave way to desperation.

Did you know once Shakti Kapoor almost made a decision to leave Bollywood?

A plea from the heart

What followed was not rage but raw honesty. “Sir, please! My name is Shakti Kapoor. I’m from the Film Institute. You’ve given everyone a chance, even Danny. Please give me one too,” he recalled telling Feroz Khan. The response was blunt: “Hey, look what you’ve done to my car.”

Why Feroz Khan didn’t forget him

Feroz Khan walked away that day, but the encounter lingered. Shakti believes that the accident—and his unfiltered plea—stayed with the filmmaker.Soon after, Feroz Khan offered him the role of the antagonist in Qurbani. A film born out of chance, timing, and desperation went on to redefine Shakti Kapoor’s career—and gave Bollywood one of its most unforgettable villains. Go to Source
