Sara opens up on feeling overwhelmed and dealing with her emotions

Sara Ali Khan opens up on the time when she was feeling overwhelmed, the importance of therapy and mental health

Actor Sara Ali Khan believes there’s no shame in admitting that life in Bollywood can be overwhelming at times. She doesn’t subscribe to the idea of putting up a façade of “I can handle everything on my own” and has instead learned that it’s perfectly fine to ask for help and take a step back when needed. For Sara, self-care has become a key part of maintaining her mental balance, whether it’s allowing herself to cry, taking a breather, or simply slowing down without guilt.Making her debut in 2018 with Kedarnath alongside the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Sara went on to feature in films like Simmba, Coolie No. 1, Atrangi Re, and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke. Over time, she realised that mental well-being is just as vital as physical fitness, and for that, she often turns to her mother, Amrita Singh, for grounding and support.“I’ve always believed that strength isn’t about bottling up your emotions, it’s about having the courage to acknowledge them. In my industry, the pressures can be intense, and it’s easy to feel like you have to ‘handle everything on your own’ to be strong,” says Sara, in an interview with Hindustan Times. Sara has often spoken about growing up with a single mother after her mom Amrita Singh and dad Saif Ali Khan separated. She admits there were moments when she felt consumed by the chaos around her but eventually found calm in embracing life’s smaller joys.“I genuinely believe therapy can be a really helpful tool, not just when you’re struggling, but even when things are going okay. It gives you a safe space to reflect, to understand your emotions better, and to just be honest with yourself,” she shares.Recalling a particularly difficult time, Sara says, “There was a time when I was feeling really overwhelmed; mentally, emotionally, just everything piling up at once.”“And in that phase, I realised how important the little things are like spending time with my mom or just watching something that makes me laugh… those small acts really helped me come back to myself,” the actor adds.
