Saif Ali Khan pays tribute to father Tiger Pataudi at Winchester College, unveils plaque

Saif Ali Khan pays tribute to father Tiger Pataudi at Winchester College, unveils plaque at the Hunter Tent Cricket pavilion - PICS

Actor Saif Ali Khan paid a heartfelt tribute to his father, the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, popularly known as Tiger Pataudi, during a special ceremony at Winchester College in the United Kingdom. The actor, who also studied at the prestigious institution, unveiled a commemorative plaque dedicated to his father at the historic Hunter Tent cricket pavilion on June 13.The ceremony took place during Wykeham Day, Winchester College’s annual summer celebration that brings together students, faculty, alumni and families to honour the institution’s traditions, sporting heritage and community spirit. This year’s event also served as an occasion to celebrate Tiger Pataudi’s remarkable cricketing legacy and his enduring connection with the college. One of Indian cricket’s most revered figures, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi began his cricketing journey at Winchester College. The newly unveiled plaque recognises both his contribution to the sport and the role the institution played in nurturing his talent during his formative years.Speaking at the event, Saif reflected on his father’s deep affection for the college and thanked Winchester for commemorating his legacy.“As a former pupil of Winchester College myself, it’s a great privilege to return here today to honour my father’s legacy. Winchester was where my father’s cricketing journey truly began. It was a place he spoke of with great affection, not only for the sport but for the friendships, values and experiences that shaped him,” Saif said.He further added, “Our family is immensely proud and grateful that Winchester College has chosen to honour him in this way. We hope this plaque will inspire future generations of pupils, just as Winchester inspired him.”Sir Richard Stagg, Warden of Winchester College, highlighted Tiger Pataudi’s extraordinary achievements and lasting impact on the game.“Tiger Pataudi remains one of the most distinguished figures in the history of cricket, and a source of immense pride to Winchester College. He was a cricketing prodigy at the School, beating a record for runs scored in a season set by Douglas Jardine in 1919. He went on to become a great cricketer and a leader of Indian cricket,” Sir Richard Stagg said.He further noted that the tribute also reflected the long-standing ties between India and the United Kingdom. “It is especially fitting that, in honouring Tiger’s legacy, we also celebrate the deep and enduring connections between the United Kingdom and India, and our shared love of the game,” he added.Remembered for his leadership, resilience and elegant style of play, Tiger Pataudi remains one of the most influential personalities in Indian cricket. The plaque at Hunter Tent now stands as a lasting tribute to a journey that began at Winchester College before he went on to become one of India’s most respected cricket captains.
