Rhea Kapoor’s team reports theft of Rs 1.35 cr diamond earrings

Sonam Kapoor's sister Rhea Kapoor's team reports shocking theft of Rs 1.35 crore diamond earrings rented for New York trip from makeup artist's bag

Sonam Kapoor’s sister Rhea Kapoor reports theft of earrings valued at Rs 1.35 crore

Filmmaker-stylist Rhea Kapoor, sister of Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, is at the centre of a jewellery theft case after diamond-studded earrings worth Rs 1.35 crore went missing from her makeup artist’s handbag. The incident reportedly occurred around the time of her trip to New York for a high-profile fashion event, and a police case has now been registered. Let’s learn more about it in detail.

What exactly happened?

According to the Mumbai Police, the jewellery had been rented from two Mumbai-based jewellers specifically for the event and was found missing only after the team landed in New York. Mumbai’s Sahar Police Station has registered a case against an unidentified person under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a formal investigation into the matter as reported by IANS.Rhea Kapoor was invited to attend the Met Gala fashion event in New York on April 29, and her entire team, including makeup artist Savleen Singh, who has worked with her for the past seven years, travelled along with her. For the event, two pairs of expensive earrings were rented from Mehta Jewellers and Goenka Jewellers in Mumbai, and Savleen Singh carried both jewellery boxes in her handbag throughout the trip. The team began their journey on April 27 at 10:25 PM, boarding an Emirates flight from Mumbai to Dubai before continuing on to New York. They arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on the evening of April 28 at around 5:30 PM and later checked into The Pierre Hotel in New York.

Jewellery boxes found empty

When Savleen Singh opened the jewellery boxes in her hotel room to hand the earrings over to a team member named Shireen, she discovered that both boxes were empty. The missing items included emerald-stone diamond gold earrings from Mehta Jewellers worth Rs 66 lakh and Zambian emerald-stone gold-bordered earrings from Goenka Jewellers worth Rs 69 lakh, totaling the stolen jewelry’s value to Rs 1.35 crore.

FIR registered, investigation underway

After returning to Mumbai, Savleen Singh filed a complaint at Sahar Police Station, following which an FIR was registered under Section 303(2) of the BNS for theft. Police officials confirmed that the case was registered based on her complaint regarding the earrings rented for Rhea Kapoor’s New York appearance.Investigators are now reviewing the entire travel timeline, from the Mumbai airport and the flight journey to the hotel stay in New York to determine whether the theft occurred at the airport, during the flight, or after the team’s arrival in the city.
