Ravi Basrur on NTR–Neel film: Music unlike ‘KGF’ or ‘Salaar’

Ravi Basrur teases ‘Epic yet rooted’ score for NTR–Prashanth Neel film; Composer says project feels like ‘Returning home’

Renowned composer Ravi Basrur is poised to create an unparalleled auditory journey for the much-anticipated collaboration between Jr NTR and Prashanth Neel, often referred to as ‘Dragon’. He portrays this venture as an extraordinary spectacle, rich in visual depth and emotional layers, intending to craft a sound experience that diverges significantly from his previous work on the ‘KGF’ franchise.

Composer Ravi Basrur has opened up about his upcoming collaboration with Jr NTR and Prashanth Neel—a film rumoured to be titled ‘Dragon’.Calling it a project of immense scale, Ravi described his reunion with the ‘KGF’ director as “like returning home.” “We understand each other without many words,” he said, acknowledging the trust that underpins their long-time collaboration. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Ravi Basrur opened up about the musical tone for the upcoming movie, “The NTR–Neel film is going to be massive, musically and visually… epic yet emotionally rooted. The soundscape will be very different from KGF or Salaar. Expect new instruments, new energy, and a lot of heart.” The composer shared that the team’s primary brief was to push boundaries while anchoring the score in deep emotion. This helped in creating something expansive yet intimate.

Rooted inspiration for the score

Despite working on some of the country’s biggest films, Ravi continues to draw from the quietude of his coastal upbringing. “Every note I compose comes from my village, my people, and the silence of the sea I grew up near,” he said during the interview. This personal journey also shaped his first original score album, Titan, which he describes as a fusion of strength, silence, and mythic power. “The idea came from my fascination with strength and silence… larger-than-life energy but rooted in emotion.”The album, two-and-a-half years in the making, blends orchestral elements with coastal rhythms and modern design.Ravi Basrur’s packed 2025 included directing and co-producing ‘Veera Chandrahasa’, a film celebrating the traditional art form Yakshagana. The film received a solid 3 star rating from ETimes with our official review saying, “If you are looking for a fresh experience while also wanting to know more about the Yakshagana art form, a bit of something that has also seeped into history, Veera Chandrahasa is the right choice.”
