Priyanka: ‘I don’t think I ever wanted to leave Bollywood’

Priyanka Chopra says 'I don’t think I ever wanted to leave Bollywood': 'I felt limited for many reasons in Hindi films'

Priyanka Chopra’s journey from being one of Bollywood’s biggest stars to carving a space for herself in Hollywood has often sparked conversation online. Now, the global actor has opened up about what led to that transition and how her decision was shaped by the search for more fulfilling opportunities. After spending several years at the top of the Hindi film industry, Priyanka gradually shifted her focus to international projects. Speaking to Firstpost, she revealed that the move was not about abandoning Bollywood but about breaking free from creative limitations.“I don’t think I ever wanted to leave Bollywood. I felt limited for many reasons when I was working in Hindi films. I was being pushed into… I was looking for opportunities that felt exciting to me as an artist and I landed up working in America,” she said.

Seeking creative freedom

Priyanka explained that her decision stemmed from a desire to explore roles that challenged her and allowed her to grow artistically. The move to the West opened doors to English-language projects and helped her redefine her global identity as an actor. She began her international career with projects like Quantico and steadily expanded her presence in Hollywood. Over the years, she has balanced work commitments across continents, maintaining strong ties to both industries.

Straddling two worlds

The transition, however, has not been without its challenges. Priyanka continues to juggle schedules between India and Los Angeles. She is currently shooting for an SS Rajamouli project while also promoting her latest release, The Bluff.Reflecting on managing both industries, she said, “I am really excited to be doing Varanasi in India again. I would hate to have to choose between the two. I straddle both the worlds and I enjoy working in both the industries. They are both different in many ways just as cultures.” Now 43, Priyanka embraces the flexibility of working internationally while staying connected to her roots. After moving to the West over a decade ago, she built a parallel career in the US and continues to operate from dual bases in India and America.Following her marriage to singer-actor Nick Jonas, the couple welcomed their daughter, Malti Marie, whom they are raising in California.
