Priyamani: ‘South industry works 12-hour shifts’

'The Family Man' star Priyamani weighs in on work hour debate: 'In the South, every industry works 12-hour shifts'

National Award-winning actor Priyamani, has seemingly weighed in on the widely debated shift hours in the film industry. At a time when actress Deepika Padukone kicked up a storm over her demands for an 8-hour shift, actors in the industry have since been weighing in on the debate. Now, ‘The Family Man’ star Priyamani, who was on a promotional spree for Season 3, shared her candid perspective on the long-standing work culture within the Southern film industries.

Priyamani on work hours in the film industry

Speaking to NBT, the actress said in a recent interaction that she continues to adapt smoothly to Mumbai’s creative environment while reflecting on the work ethics back home. Addressing work hour routines commonly followed in the South, Priyamani said, “In the South, every industry usually follows a 12-hour workday. People have been working like this for years.”

Work hours are ‘subjective’

In another recent interview with News18, the National Award-winning star elaborated on the subject, saying, “It is completely subjective. There are times when you will have to adjust, which is okay, and you should make room for it.”

Deepika’s film exit over work hours

The conversation around fixed working hours for actors intensified when reports suggested that Deepika bowed out of a film owing to her preference for an eight-hour shift, particularly after welcoming daughter Dua, with husband Ranveer Singh. This and other factors reportedly played a role in her exit from ‘Spirit’ and ‘Kalki 2898 AD Part 2’. Padukone addressed the issue in interviews with CNBC-TV18 and Brut, clarifying that her demands were reasonable. “I don’t think what I’m asking for is ridiculously unfair, and I think only someone who’s worked in the system enough will know that the conditions that we work in,” she said. She added that she has never shied away from “challenging the status quo”. She went on to add, “If I can see that something can be different or better, even if there are systems that are age-old, I’m okay to ruffle those feathers… I’m okay being abused at. I can very easily cut out the noise.”Deepika Will be seen next in the film ‘King’, starring opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Go to Source
