Not Harrison Ford but Tom Selleck was first choice for Indiana Jones

Not Harrison Ford but Tom Selleck was first choice for Indiana Jones; ‘Strings of destiny didn't cross,’ says Steven Spielberg

Indiana Jones would have been completely different, as another charming actor was supposed to take on the role instead of Harrison Ford. Recalling the time when Steven Spielberg interviewed potential candidates for the role with George Lucas, he said Tom Selleck was chosen as the one to play the iconic role after a lot of tests. Here’s a closer look at Steven Spielberg recalling the casting of Indiana Jones.

Steven Spielberg recalls Tom Selleck being shortlisted for the role

Steven Spielberg shared that they had locked in Tom Selleck after the actor read for the role. “That was going to be whether we made the move or not. We both discovered and decided that Tom Selleck should play Indiana Jones,” he said on Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson’s IMO podcast. However, Spielberg would have asked him to remove his iconic mustache if he ended up taking the role, marking the point where “the strings of destiny didn’t cross with Tom.”During that time, Tom Selleck’s TV show was going into production, which went on to become a success that ran for nearly a decade. “We wanted Tom, we gave Tom the part, and he had, which we didn’t realize, an outstanding contract with the CBS network to do ‘Magnum P.I.,’” the renowned filmmaker continued.

The events of how Indiana Jones became a successful film franchise

Spielberg remembered that he told George Lucas that one more actor could have the potential to do the role. After sending the ‘Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark’ script to Harrison Ford, the actor fell in love and agreed to continue with the film. The successful butterfly effect went on to become a legendary franchise of five films and a humongous fanbase. Started in 1981, the recent film was ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ which was released in 2023.
