The film, which also stars Sai Pallavi, tells the true story of fishermen from a village in Andhra Pradesh. News 18 reported that in his words, creating Thandel Raju was arduous yet motivating. To understand the actual hardships, courage, and daily life of fishermen, he took a break from work and joined them on a fishing trip. He said that knowing their lives well helped him portray the character truthfully when bringing their stories to the audience.
