Famed comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, who is best known for his roles in ‘Dreamgirls’, ‘Coming to America’, and ‘Dr Dolittle’, was recently honoured with the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award. During the ceremony, many guests and fellow veterans from the industry were invited to attend. This even included a rare appearance from 99-year-old Mel Brooks!
Mel Brooks honors Eddie Murphy with the lifetime achievement award
An OTT special about the event, titled ‘ The 51st AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Eddie Murphy’, was recently released, with many guests attending the event in honor of Eddie Murphy. This guest list also included one of the most iconic names in comedy, Mel Brooks.During the event, Brooks praised Murphy and called him one of the ‘modern kings’ of comedy in his speech. He started off his speech about the actor by citing, “Before you were born, even before I was born, the movies were born. One of the great gifts they gave us, perhaps the greatest gift, was laughter. In its earliest days, there were kings of comedy: Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd.”He continued to praise Murphy and talked about how he set the bar high in comedy and was one of the pioneers in the comedy industry. He added, “Some have talents that burst beyond the screen and onto the stage. They create characters that have us look inside ourselves. And there are some, very few, that did it all. But, tonight, beyond the echo of laughter, we honor a man full of greater surprises, and one who broke barriers to drive culture forward.”
