Their bond, however, was said to be rooted more in mutual respect and admiration than a full-blown romance.As Meena Kumari’s marriage with Kamal Amrohi faced troubles, she found solace in Gulzar. Their mutual love for poetry and shayari drew them closer. While Meena was celebrated for her acting, only a few close to her knew about her passion for writing poetry.

Friendship blooms on the set of Benazir

Meena Kumari and Gulzar became friends while shooting for Benazir. During this time, he discovered her love for poetry and encouraged her to write more. Unfortunately, Meena’s health began to decline, and she was later diagnosed with liver cirrhosis.

Completing Mere Apne despite failing health

Despite her fragile health, Meena Kumari went on to star in Mere Apne, directed by Gulzar, and completed the film even as her condition worsened. She passed away on March 31, 1972, but before her death, she entrusted Gulzar with her most cherished possession—her collection of poetry and shayaris, knowing he would value and preserve them.

Preserving Meena Kumari’s literary legacy

After Meena Kumari’s death, Gulzar ensured she received the recognition she deserved for expressing her emotions through poetry. He compiled her shayaris and poems into a book titled Meena Kumari Ki Shayari and also released another collection called Tanha Chand, showcasing her heartfelt writings.Meena Kumari’s life was marked by tragedy and unfulfilled longing for love and attention. Despite being one of the leading actresses of her era, she often felt unloved. Amid her struggles, Gulzar became a source of hope and comfort, bringing joy and inspiration back into her life. Whether their bond was romantic or one of deep admiration remains unknown.
