Karan Johar admits feeling lonely at National Awards

Karan Johar admits feeling lonely at National Awards: 'They asked who my plus one was — I want to kill people who engage in PDA'

Filmmaker Karan Johar may be one of the most successful names in Indian cinema, but behind the glitz, glamour, and accolades, he admits to battling moments of loneliness. The director, who is a single parent to twins Yash and Roohi, recently shared his emotional reflections on Serving It Up with Sania, a podcast hosted by Sania Mirza.

Karan Johar on being single despite success

Karan revealed that while he feels fulfilled as a father, he sometimes longs for a romantic partner to share life’s highs and milestones with. Quoting the classic song Har Kisiko Nahi Milta Pyaar Zindagi Mein, he said, “You feel the loneliest in your highs and not your lows. In your lows, you have your family, friends, parents, and kids. I have two cousin sisters I am very close to, and I have my best friends. But in your highs, what do you do?”

He went on to share a particularly emotional moment from earlier this year: “I remember I got a call that I was getting a National Award. I hung up the call, and for one minute all I thought about was, ‘What do I do tonight? Whose house do I go to? Whose hand do I hold? A little pat on the back — I needed and wanted to feel happy.’”

‘They asked me who my plus one was, and I had no one’

The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani director recalled attending the National Awards ceremony in Delhi, where he was reminded of his solitude. “When I went to the awards, they asked me who my plus one was, and I had no one. Everybody was coming with their partners, and my mum was not well enough to travel, and my kids were too young. It hits you hard,” he admitted. He continued, “I do get lonely and, on many nights when I am eating alone, I don’t go to my dining table. I eat in my room so I can dilute the loneliness. But they say never say never, and when it happens, I am standing with my arms wide open like Shah Rukh Khan.”

‘New Year’s Eve is the worst for single people’

Karan also revealed that special occasions like New Year’s Eve can be particularly difficult. “When people go out celebrating with their partners, I feel very lonely. I end up ranting to my single friends and prefer not to go out with couples,” he said, jokingly adding that he “wants to kill people who engage in PDA” in front of him.
