Kanagaraj to make debut as a lead in Matheswaran’s story

Lokesh Kanagaraj to make his debut as a lead in Arun Matheswaran’s story once narrated to Dhanush

Renowned for his gripping films ‘Rocky,’ ‘Saani Kaayidham,’ and ‘Captain Miller,’ director Arun Matheswaran is now reportedly collaborating with filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. In Kollywood, the news of this dynamic duo joining hands has generated immense buzz. Matheswaran, known for pushing creative boundaries, is often compared to Western noir masters for his uncompromising narratives and stylized brutality. His earlier works, marked by raw intensity and visceral violence, made a lasting impression—particularly on Lokesh Kanagaraj, who has long admired his approach, even though ‘Captain Miller’ carried a relatively softer tone.

A Script Years in the Making

Before stepping into direction, Arun Matheswaran had penned a script titled ‘Devdas,’ which he once narrated to Dhanush during the shoot of ‘Captain Miller.’ While Matheswaran was expected to direct the Ilaiyaraaja biopic starring Dhanush, the project was delayed due to the actor’s prior commitments. In the meantime, the director explored other ventures, including discussions for a Hindi film and a possible collaboration with Vijay Deverakonda.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Admiration Turns into Collaboration

According to Indiaglitz, ‘Rocky’ and ‘Saani Kaayidham’ rank among Lokesh Kanagaraj’s favorite films, largely because of Matheswaran’s non-linear storytelling, bold dialogues, and unapologetic violence. When Matheswaran pitched his Devdas-inspired story, Lokesh was immediately drawn to it and agreed to come on board—not behind the camera, but in front of it—as the film’s lead actor. An official announcement is expected after the release of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming directorial ‘Coolie. ‘

Waiting for the Right Moment

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s recent directorial ‘Coolie,’ starring Rajinikanth, has received a tremendous response at the box office despite mixed reviews. Fans are now eagerly waiting to see when Lokesh will begin his long-awaited hero debut. A leading production house is said to be backing this ambitious collaboration, with a formal announcement likely to be made very soon. Go to Source
