Huma Qureshi talks about ‘Baby Do Die Do’

‘She is deaf and mute, and she has a gun’: Huma Qureshi hopes ‘Baby Do Die Do’ inspires better action roles for women, slams hyper s*xualised female assassin

Huma Qureshi talks about ‘Baby Do Die Do’ and how she hopes that it inspires a new era of action roles for women

Huma Qureshi has taken on yet another challenging role with ‘Baby Do Die Do.’ Already known for being a reckoning force in cinema and for working on more non-conventional roles such as ‘Maharani’ and ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, the actress has been growing a diverse portfolio over the years. In one of her recent interviews, the actress commented about her latest project, talking about what it was like to work through everything and how she hopes that her new film inspires more such interesting roles for women to be prioritized. Here’s what the actress had to say about the film.

Huma Qureshi talks about ‘Baby Do Die Do’

The already released thriller film, revolving around the life of a deaf and mute assassin, has already created quite a lot of buzz online. With all eyes on her character, Qureshi has shared that she hopes the film will inspire many more like it. While in conversation with PTI to promote the film, the actress did a deep dive into what it was like to work on such a concept for her.She started off by discussing the character, sharing that “The fact that she is normal-looking and yet such a lethal killer is what makes it such an interesting tale… We just wanted to make a very relatable character. Baby is somebody you just meet in a Mumbai local and not bat an eyelid. I think there could be a lot more change when it comes to writing better parts. There’s definitely a step in the right direction.”She also opened up about the existing roles women usually play in action and thriller sets, sharing how she feels that stars are often hypersexualized in such femme fatale characters. She added, “That women have to be in these tight-fitting clothes, hyper sexualised sort of imagery to be able to be assassins. I think it is coming from patriarchy.”Moreover, while talking about the film, she commented that, “I think when you think of people, especially women with disabilities, you almost think of it as a weakness; you almost think of them as a weakness. Here you had a hitwoman, who is lethal and is a weapon of mass destruction. Yet, she has a disability that is actually not her weakness; it is her strongest asset.”

How Huma Qureshi landed the script for ‘Baby Do Die Do’

The actress also provided some insight into how she landed the role and what made her say yes to the script in the first place. She shared that she had come across the script almost 4 years ago, and from the get-go she was hell-bent on starring in it. Providing more context, she mentioned that, “I decided I wanted to act in it. When I didn’t find a suitable producer, we decided to produce it under my production company called Saleem Siblings, and I love the fact that it is pulpy, it is cool, it has got a female hit woman, and she is deaf and mute, and she has a gun.”

More about ‘Baby Do Die Do’

‘Baby Do Die Do’ has been directed by Nachiket Samant and was recently released on July 3. Other than Huma Qureshi playing the lead role of the assassin, Baby Karmarkar, the film also features names like Sikandar Kher as Zafar, Chunky Panday as PM Jain, Seema Pahwa as Anjum Khan and Rachit Singh as Siddhu. The actress talked about the film and stated that it is a “quirky, it is a thriller, it is also a comedy and a musical as it has original composition and a very unique style.” She also praised Samant for his work and originality in the script, and shared that it translates really well on screen.

How Huma Qureshi prepped for the role

Since the main role is to portray someone who is deaf and mute, Qureshi had to undergo a lot of preparation for the film. She revealed that she properly trained in sign language and even went and visited schools for children with special needs.”I had a coach who had me learn sign language. I also went to a school for kids with special needs and … who were not able to speak or hear…I learnt a lot just by interacting with those kids,” she mentioned. On the work front, Qureshi will next feature in ‘Toxic’ alongside Yash. The film has been directed by Geetu Mohandas and is slated to release on August 26. Originally, the film was supposed to be released on March 19, which was later delayed to June 4. Go to Source
