How Van Der Beek secured his family before his demise

James Van Der Beek secured a down payment for the family’s Texas ranch before he passed away - Report

Even through his battles with cancer, James Van Der Beek made sure his family would stay on their beloved Texas ranch. Just weeks before he passed away, the ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star took one last, determined step for his family. He finalized the down payment on the Texas ranch they’d called home for years, turning it from a rental into something truly theirs. He didn’t do it alone; close friends stepped in, helping him sort out the financial and legal details through a trust.

James Van Der Beek’s final act

James’ representative told PEOPLE, “James secured the down payment for the Texas ranch for the family with the help of friends through a trust so they could shift from rent to mortgage.” For the unversed, James loved his family fiercely. He married Kimberly in 2010, and together they raised six kids. Back in 2020, James and Kimberly left Beverly Hills behind and moved to Austin with their kids — Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, Joshua, and Jeremiah, who wasn’t even born yet when they first made the move. The ranch, a wide-open 36-acre patch of Texas near Austin in Spicewood, became so much more than just a house. It was where the family found peace, joy, and some real connection. On January 9, 2026, James and Kimberly finally bought it outright for about USD 4.76 million. Reportedly, that was one of the last big decisions James made before cancer took him on February 11, 2026.In November 2022, James, during an interaction with the abovementioned portal, shared what Texas gave his family. He called it “centering” — just a totally different life. For the kids, it was grounding, a kind of learning he knew they’d never get in a classroom. They played outside, they learned from the land, they sang for rain and chased it when it came. “It’s connected us, not just to nature, but to the natural rhythms all around us,” he said.

Who was James Van Der Beek?

Most people remember James as Dawson Leery from ‘Dawson’s Creek’, that late ’90s show that just about everyone watched or at least heard about. That role made him a star and gave him a reputation for sensitivity and thoughtfulness in Hollywood. He was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1977, started in school plays, and slowly worked his way up—from TV to film, from ‘Varsity Blues’ to ‘Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23’, and plenty of other projects that let him show off a different side.

The Van Der Beek family: Where they stand now

After James died on February 11, his friends quickly set up a GoFundMe to help the Van Der Beek family. Medical bills had drained their savings, so they needed help covering everyday expenses and making sure the kids could stay in school. The response was huge, and people donated over USD 2.2 million in just two days. The day after the fundraiser launched, the organizers posted a heartfelt thank you. They said, “Your kindness has meant more than we can put into words. In the middle of deep grief, your support has been a light. It reminds us that love is real, that community is strong, and that James’s spirit continues to bring people together.” Go to Source
