A decade later, the Cauvery dispute again affected Tamil cinema when Vikram’s ‘Thaandavam’ was in theatres. While the film opened to a decent response, many theatre owners voluntarily stopped screening Tamil movies fearing attacks and damage to their properties. The move threw the film’s run in Karnataka into disarray with exhibitors prioritizing public safety over business as protests intensified across the state.
‘Kaala’ (2018): Rajinikanth’s comments sparked opposition
Rajinikanth’s ‘Kaala’ ran into fresh trouble after the actor openly supported the formation of the Cauvery Management Board. Several pro-Kannada organisations objected to the film’s release and demanded a boycott. Many theatres cancelled or delayed their morning shows and police security had to be deployed at several sites before screening resumed. Siddharth’s ‘Chithha’ promotions disrupted in 2023
The Cauvery issue also came up in film promotions. The incident happened in 2023 when actor Siddharth was in Bengaluru to promote the Kannada version of ‘Chithha’; members of a pro-Kannada group barged into the press meet demanding the event be stopped. They said that no promotions should be held while the Cauvery crisis was ongoing. Siddharth did his best to de-escalate the situation but finally cut off contact with the man and left. Meanwhile, cinema halls in Karnataka too declared temporary closures in solidarity with the protests, underscoring the issue’s reach beyond film releases.
‘Jana Nayagan’ (2026): Vijay’s film hit during second-week run
The latest film to take the brunt of it is Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’. The protests over Cauvery in Karnataka led to several screenings of the film being postponed or cancelled in the second week of its theatrical run. ‘Jana Nayagan’ was replaced with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in some Bengaluru movie theatres due to the prevailing conditions.
