How Chris Hemsworth dealth with risk of Alzheimer’s

Chris Hemsworth: How the ‘Thor’ star navigated the risk of Alzheimer’s

Imagine being the ‘God of Thunder’ and still not being invincible when it comes to the scariest health scares in life!Chris Hemsworth, the superhero everyone knows as Thor, got some news that really shook up his life. During what was supposed to be just a regular genetic test for a documentary, doctors told him he had a much higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. That revelation hit hard. However, instead of hiding it, Chris faced it head-on. He changed his habits, put his family first, and even started making documentaries to talk openly about brain health.

Chris Hemsworth and the serious health scare

The moment everything changed happened on set while filming National Geographic’s ‘Limitless With Chris Hemsworth’. Imagine being at work and getting a health update that rocks your whole world! The show dives into how people can live longer and healthier, so part of that was getting his DNA analyzed.Per Entertainment Weekly, that’s when he found out he has two copies of the APOE4 gene, one from each parent, which puts him at eight to ten times the normal risk for Alzheimer’s. It’s not a guarantee he’ll get the disease, but it’s a big red flag. For Chris, the idea of losing his memories was terrifying, especially memories with his wife and kids. But he didn’t let that fear control him. Instead, he used it as a push to live with more intention.Things got even more serious and scary when his dad, Craig, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Suddenly, this wasn’t just a future possibility; it was happening in his family right now. As though watching his dad’s memories fade made Chris realize how fragile life is, and how important it is to make every moment with family count. For the unversed, Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder that destroys memory, thinking skills, and eventually the ability to perform simple tasks. Per the Alzheimer’s Association, it is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of cases, and is characterized by the abnormal buildup of proteins (amyloid plaques and tau tangles) that cause nerve cell death and brain shrinkage.

Navigating the health risk

Per Page Six, after the health revelation, Chris made some serious changes. He started focusing on things that protect brain health: regular workouts, especially cardio; better sleep; mindfulness and stress reduction; and even experimenting with cold exposure and resilience training, which he tried out in his documentary. He also pulled back from his normally packed filming schedule, choosing to slow down and spend more time at home. When the news about his genetic risk came out, rumors started swirling. Some people thought he’d been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or was done with acting. However, Chris set the record straight: he doesn’t have the disease. The test just showed he’s at higher risk, and while he’s still acting, he’s being careful about the roles he takes.

Raising awareness about the health condition

Hemsworth’s experience didn’t just change his personal life. In 2025, Chris released a very personal documentary, ‘Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember’. The film follows him and his dad on a road trip across Australia after Craig’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. They visit places from their past, reconnect with old friends, and try to stir up old memories. The documentary digs into reminiscence therapy, which uses familiar locations and meaningful experiences to spark brain activity for people with dementia. Go to Source
