‘GDN’ box office collections day 1: R. Madhavan film earns Rs 59 lakh gross; Tamil version dominates opening day

R. Madhavan’s ‘G.D.N.’ has made a modest start at the Indian box office. The biographical drama arrived in theatres on August 7. According to Sacnilk, the film earned an estimated India gross of Rs 59 lakh on its opening day.The film’s India net collection stood at around Rs 53 lakh. Its worldwide gross was also reported at Rs 59 lakh. The opening numbers indicate a slow start for the film. G.D.N. will now look to benefit from the weekend.

Tamil and Telugu collections for ‘G.D.N’

The Tamil version accounted for the bulk of the film’s earnings on the first day. It recorded an estimated net collection of Rs 46 lakh in India. The Telugu version earned approximately Rs 7 lakh net on Day 1.

R. Madhavan plays G.D. Naidu

‘G.D.N.’ is based on the life of G.D. Naidu, the celebrated inventor and industrialist from Coimbatore. Known for his work in engineering and technology, Naidu was a self-taught innovator who made a name for himself during the colonial era.R. Madhavan takes on the central role of G.D. Naidu. Priyamani plays Chellammal, while Jayaram appears as Ambalapara Krishnan. The cast also includes Sathyaraj, Dushara Vijayan and Vinay Rai. The story brings the lesser-known journey of the pioneering inventor to the screen. It also marks another performance-driven role for Madhavan.

ETimes review gives 3 stars

The film has received a 3-star rating from ETimes. The review highlighted Madhavan’s performance and his portrayal of Naidu across different stages of his life. The ETimes review read, “This is Madhavan’s second rescue act for an unsung Indian innovator after Rocketry, and he stays compelling across four decades of Naidu, always the sharpest man in whatever room he’s arguing in. Jayaram plays a worthy adversary, a man who worships paperwork the way others worship gods. Sathyaraj has a fine time, though the writing mostly uses him as a second barrel for the hero’s punchlines; between the two of them, every opponent gets out-chessed twice over, and the perpetual one-upmanship borders on smug. Karunakaran, so often the comic relief, gets a villainous turn instead and does it justice.”The film’s opening day numbers remain on the lower side. However, the weekend collections could provide a clearer picture of its box office status.DISCLAIMER: The box office numbers and the data in this article are compiled from public and industry sources.
