G.V. Prakash Kumar on his Hindi debut Nayi Naveli

G.V. Prakash Kumar on his Hindi debut 'Nayi Naveli’: ‘Yami Gautam is the lead, so my songs are in safe hands’

A.R. Rahman’s nephew and National Award-winning composer G.V. Prakash Kumar is making his full-fledged Hindi debut with Aanand L Rai’s ‘Nayi Naveli’, starring Yami Gautam. The composer, known for over 120 Tamil and Telugu films, says language is no barrier for him.

After making his mark as a composer across Tamil and Telugu cinema, G. V. Prakash Kumar is now set to take on his first major Hindi film score with ‘Nayi Naveli’, a project backed by Aanand L Rai’s production house and helmed by Balaji Mohan. The musician, who is also A. R. Rahman’s nephew, opens up about scoring music for the Yami Gautam Dhar-starrer, the timeless charm of lip-synced songs, and the rumours swirling around his remuneration.

G.V. Prakash Kumar on ‘Nayi Naveli’: ‘My songs are in safe hands’

Speaking to Variety India about helming his first complete Hindi score for ‘Nayi Naveli’, Prakash Kumar traced his journey in Hindi cinema and shared his excitement about the project. He said, “I had a chance to work on ‘Gangs of Wassepur’ because Anurag Kashyap was a very good friend of mine. But it wasn’t a full-fledged Hindi debut for me. As for ‘Nayi Naveli’ with Anand L Rai’s banner, I’m composing all the songs. It will be very interesting. I’m confident the songs will turn out beautifully. Yami Gautam is playing the lead. We all know how beautifully she expresses emotions. So, my songs are in safe hands. ‘Nayi Naveli,’ which is directed by Balaji Mohan, will be something to look forward to.”

G.V. Prakash Kumar on composing in Hindi: ‘Language doesn’t matter’

When questioned about whether crafting music for a Hindi film feels different from working on a Tamil or Telugu project, Prakash Kumar quickly dismissed the notion of any distinction. He said, “It is no different for me from a Telugu or Tamil film. Every score is a challenge for me. The language doesn’t matter. I compose every score as if it’s my first.”
