First message that turned Basil Joseph to CINEMA

First message that turned ‘Minnal Murali’ director Basil Joseph from coding and deadlines to CINEMA

Years back, in the busy world of IT cubicles a young software engineer named Basil Joseph was quietly dreaming of something far bigger than code and deadlines—cinema!Little did he know that his life was about to take a cinematic twist worthy of a blockbuster.Basil was employed in a software role at a popular company where his daily routine revolved around coding and deadlines. Despite the structured corporate life his interest in filmmaking continued to grow in the background.

A short film that opened the first door

Basil created a short film ‘Priyamvadha Katharayano’ during this period and shared it online, tagging filmmaker Vineeth Sreenivasan, whom he deeply admired. As revealed by Basil Joseph in an interview with Sujith Bhakthan, the video initially went unnoticed by Vineeth. However, it eventually reached actor Aju Varghese, who came across it while browsing Facebook. Impressed by the work, Aju responded positively. He said, “It’s great.” That small reaction became the first step in a chain of events that would later transform Basil’s career.

The chain reaction

After watching the short film himself, Aju Varghese encouraged Vineeth Sreenivasan to take a look. Vineeth later viewed the project and appreciated Basil’s effort. When Basil expressed interest in working as an assistant director, Vineeth responded cautiously. He said, “Let’s see, I’m not doing any new films right now.” At that point, there was no immediate opportunity, but the connection had been established.

Eight months of waiting

Basil returned to his routine job while continuing to hold on to his filmmaking dream. Several months passed without any clear direction. Then, one ordinary day, he received a message on Facebook Messenger from Vineeth Sreenivasan. It read, “Are you still interested in assisting me?” Basil later described this as a defining moment in his life, calling it “the most life-changing message of my life.”

The first meeting

What followed was pure magic. A meeting in Chennai. Vineeth arrived casually in three-fourths and an i20. Basil and his friends showed up in turbans, grabbing biryani and mutton brain fry from a beachside spot. They talked movies, dreams, and possibilities. And just like that, from June onwards, Vineeth said the words Basil had been waiting for: “Join me. We’re starting a movie.”With this one message and that word – ‘Join me’—it opened the door for Basil Joseph to the vast world of cinema.Basil Joseph’s career turning point makes us understand that: “Sometimes the smallest message becomes the biggest turning point in life.” Go to Source
