Farah Khan says her family got poor because of Ayan Mukerji's father: 'The film bombed at the box office on Friday'

Filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan recently revisited memories from her childhood and spoke candidly about her family’s financial struggles during a fun cooking vlog featuring actor Tanishaa Mukerji and her cook Dilip. The episode, filled with light-hearted banter and nostalgic conversations, also included an amusing story involving filmmaker Ayan Mukerji’s father, veteran actor Deb Mukherjee. The vlog began with Tanishaa giving Farah a tour of her home, which reflected strong Bengali aesthetics and traditions. The two then headed to the kitchen to prepare sabudana khichdi before settling on the terrace for a candid chat about growing up in film families and experiencing the highs and lows of the industry. While discussing difficult phases from her childhood, Farah recalled how her family’s financial condition changed overnight after one of her father’s films failed at the box office. “I always tell Ayan Mukerji that because of his dad, hum gareeb hue the (we became poor). Because my dad made his first big colour film with Deb Mukherjee in the lead role, and it bombed at the box office on Friday, and on Monday, we became poor,” she said.Farah went on to explain how filmmaking during that era was far riskier because producers and filmmakers often invested their own money into projects, unlike the studio-backed system seen today. The film she referred to was ‘Aisa Bhi Hota Hai’, a 1971 release directed by Kamran Khan and starring Deb Mukherjee, Nandita Bose, Tun Tun and Jalal Agha.Tanishaa related to Farah’s experience and revealed that her own family had also witnessed financial instability based on how her father Shomu Mukherjee’s films performed commercially. “We also went through these phases jab daddy ki pictures aati thi, chalti thi or nahi chalti thi toh we used to be poor for 2 years – 3 years,” she shared. Shomu Mukherjee had produced several films over the years, including ‘Pathar Ke Insan’, ‘Lover Boy’ and ‘Chaila Babu’. The conversation also took an interesting turn when Tanishaa revealed that she has stepped into writing. She shared that she has already completed a web series script as well as a film screenplay, though she hasn’t narrated either project to anyone yet because she feels she still has many stories to tell.Farah launched her cooking vlog series in 2024, and it quickly became a hit among viewers because of the entertaining chemistry she shares with her cook Dilip. The episodes usually feature celebrity home visits, candid chats, cooking sessions and house tours. Over time, Dilip himself became an internet favourite because of his comic timing and natural screen presence.Farah had earlier revealed that the popularity of the vlog series significantly improved Dilip’s life, helping him clear his debts and even begin constructing a house in his hometown. On the professional front, Farah also recently confirmed that she is preparing to direct her next film by the end of this year. While she has not disclosed details about the project yet, she revealed that Shah Rukh Khan will headline the film. The duo has previously delivered several successful films together, including Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om and Happy New Year.
