DYK: Sridevi’s mother once wanted her to marry Kamal Haasan

Sridevi’s mother once wanted her to marry Kamal Haasan; deets inside

Kamal Haasan and Sridevi’s on-screen pairing remains one of the most iconic in Indian cinema. Their performance in the 1983 film Sadma continues to be regarded as one of the finest examples of emotional storytelling. The duo’s chemistry was so compelling that it not only captured the hearts of audiences but reportedly also led Sridevi’s mother to hope they would marry in real life. The revelation came from Kamal Haasan himself in a heartfelt note titled “The 28 Avatars of Sridevi,” which he wrote following the late actress’s demise in 2018. The actor read the note publicly at a memorial service held in her honor, reflecting on their enduring friendship and professional collaboration that spanned multiple films. In the note, Kamal Haasan shared that Sridevi’s mother often encouraged the idea of marriage between the two actors. However, Kamal clarified that he had always declined the suggestion, explaining that he viewed Sridevi as family and could never imagine marrying her. He described their bond as deeply respectful and pure, adding that Sridevi held the same sentiment toward him throughout her life.

According to Kamal Haasan, Sridevi always addressed him as “Sir,” a sign of the immense respect she had for him. Their relationship, he noted, was defined by mutual admiration and trust rather than romance.Their first meeting dates back to 1976, on the sets of the Tamil film ‘Moondru Mudichu,’ directed by K. Balachander. At the time, Sridevi was only about 13 years old and had just begun her acting career. Kamal Haasan, who was not only her co-star but also worked as an assistant director on the film, was assigned the responsibility of helping her rehearse her lines and scenes.Over the years, the two went on to star together in several acclaimed films, including ‘Moondram Pirai’ — which was later remade in Hindi as ‘Sadma.’
