‘Doomsday’ to skip IMAX release because of ‘Dune’?

'Avengers: Doomsday' will not release in IMAX? 'Dune: Part Three' locks screens for three weeks: Reports

The biggest clash on the Hollywood stage, between ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’ is slated for December 18. However, don’t expect this high-stakes box-office clash to play out on IMAX screens. The upcoming battle, that Robert Downey Jr and Timothee Chalamet have already nicknamed as ‘Dunesday’, will reportedly have limited reach as according to Empire City Box Office, ‘Dune: Part Three’ has secured exclusive access to IMAX theatres. The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, has reportedly locked its release window for three consecutive weeks, leaving no premium-format screens available for ‘Doomsday’ during its opening run. Notably, the sci-fi epic had locked in ‘December 18’ as its release date first.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ original release dates

Prior to picking its December release, ‘Doomsday’ was initially slated for a May 1, 2026 release. However, the makers decided to push back the release by seven months and opted for a December 18, 2026, release while also postponing ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ from May 7, 2027, to December 17, 2027.As per the report, this is said to be one of the key reasons why Warner Bros. has no plans to move ‘Dune: Part Three’ despite the Marvel superhero film landing on the same day.

‘Dune: Part 3’ shot in IMAX format

Much like Christopher Nolan, the upcoming Denis Villeneuve directorial was largely shot using IMAX cameras, further cementing the film’s release on premium-format screens.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ box office predictions

‘Doomsday’ is expected to perform well at the box office and possibly even come out as 2026’s highest-grossing film. Given that it is the next ‘Avengers’ film after the 2019 flick ‘Avengers: Endgame’, it is expected to safely surpass the USD 1.9 billion range. ‘Endgame’ earned over USD 2 billion and is currently the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. As the film brings back familiar faces and characters like Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston among many others to the forefront of the battle, the film is expected to draw in fans of the franchise. Meanwhile, the film is also tied to the next ‘Avengers’ film ‘Secret Wars’. With the film already slated for a 2027 release, several fans are likely not going to want to miss this. Meanwhile, ‘Dune’ will close its successful three-part franchise with this final epic. Go to Source
