Dia Mirza reacted to the recent Mumbai Metro pillar collapse, questioning the kind of development people support. The tragic accident at an under-construction Metro site at Mulund west LBS marg has raised fresh concerns about the safety of the city’s infrastructure. A part of the bridge’s parapet broke off and fell on an autorickshaw passing below, killing one person and seriously injuring three others. The incident has left residents shocked and started new discussions about how safely and responsibly Mumbai’s rapid infrastructure projects are being carried out.

The actress reacted to the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter, questioning the public’s idea of development. She asked, “What idea of infrastructure do you support?” She further added, “One that kills, suffocates, and destroys health and life? Or One that cares for and values life?”.

Her comments received mixed reactions online. One user replied, “Nothing like that, no suffocation ! Daily going in tremendous rush like kide makode caused more problems to self respect & self esteem.” Another wrote, “Obviously, One that cares for and values life.”

Government’s Response to the Incident

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his sympathy for the victims of the Metro construction accident, extending condolences to the bereaved family and prayers for the injured. The government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs.5 lakh to the family of the deceased and will cover all medical expenses of those receiving treatment.

MMRDA Issues Statement, Launches Probe

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) released a statement expressing regret over the accident. It appealed to the public to avoid spreading false information and confirmed that a high-level inquiry has been launched. Officials stated that strict action would be taken against those responsible. Financial penalties have also been imposed, with a fine of Rs 5 crore on the contractor and Rs 1 crore on the general consultants. The investigation into the collapse is still underway.
