Dhurandhar: Sujoy defends Ranveer’s film following criticism

‘Dhurandhar’: Sujoy Ghosh defends Ranveer Singh's film following criticism over the use of Madhubala’s timeless qawwali; ‘No one claimed...’

Ranveer Singh’s new film ‘Dhurandhar’, directed by Aditya Dhar, is an espionage thriller inspired by real events. The story follows a daring undercover agent amidst intense conflicts. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and others, releasing on December 5, 2025, with Netflix streaming afterward.

Ranveer Singh’s new movie ‘Dhurandhar’ has got people talking on social media, but not all opinions are good. Some people said the movie is not original because it uses the old ‘Madhubala’ song ‘Na Toh Karvan Ki Talaash Hai’. The filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh defended the movie, saying the song was never claimed to be new but is a classic everyone loves.

Sujoy Ghosh praises the trailer

Ghosh took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the Dhurandhar trailer enthusiastically. He said “That dhurandhar trailer is toooo good. all my favorite actors in one film. And that song at the end of the trailer? ekdum kickum assum (it is awesome).”

Criticism over song originality

A social media user commented on the trailer, “That song at the end of #Dhurandhar is not original but a version of Manna Dey’s song word by word… in terms of music, Bollywood has zero originality to offer.” In response, Sujoy came to the film’s defense, stating, “No one claimed its original. infact if anything… its good that they got a song from barsaat ki raat out there.”

Concerns about Bollywood’s music trends

Responding to the discussion, a social media user said, “Agree on that. this is just painful (while full respect to folks who bring back sweet memories of past) to see that no good songs are coming out except here and there couple of songs in few movies. I wrote that because now it has become a trend to pick past songs, create a new and get done with it.”

About the classic Qawwali

The song ‘Na Toh Karvan Ki Talaash Hai’ is performed by legendary singers Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, Sudha Malhotra, and SD Batish. It is part of the 1960 classic film ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’, directed by PL Santoshi and produced by R Chandra. The romantic musical features iconic actors Madhubala, Bharat Bhushan and Shyama, making it a memorable and cherished piece of Indian cinema.

‘Dhurandhar’ film details

‘Dhurandhar’, directed by Aditya Dhar, boasts a powerful ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Arjun, Akshaye Khanna, and Sanjay Dutt. The film is produced by Aditya Dhar, Jyoti Deshpande, and Lokesh Dhar.
