CM Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ clears CBFC after months of battle, gets A certificate

CM Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' finally gets an 'A' certificate from CBFC after months of legal battle and delays, after release date announcement

After months of legal battles, certification delays, piracy leaks and endless speculation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ has finally received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film has been awarded an A certificate, bringing to an end one of the longest and most controversial censor processes in recent Tamil cinema. Its certified runtime is 3 hours and 3 minutes.Although the CBFC certificate has now been uploaded on the board’s official website, the detailed list of cuts is yet to be made public. According to industry reports, Vijay’s much-awaited farewell film is likely to arrive in theatres on July 23 or July 24. The makers are yet to announce the release date officially. Originally, ‘Jana Nayagan’ was slated for a January 9 release ahead of the Pongal festivities and just months before Vijay’s maiden electoral contest. The film was submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025, but instead of receiving certification within the usual timeframe, it got caught in an unusually prolonged approval process. The examining committee initially asked the makers to implement certain modifications. After the requested changes were made and the film was resubmitted, the producers said they had been informed that the film was considered suitable for a U/A certificate. However, the certification process hit another roadblock after one of the examining committee members reportedly lodged an internal objection, claiming that certain portions of the film could hurt public sentiments. Following the complaint, the process came to a standstill, and the makers were advised to submit the film to the revising committee. Around the same time, unverified reports suggested that the film’s release could influence Vijay’s political prospects ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which were then scheduled for April 23.On January 6, production banner KVN Productions moved the Madras High Court, seeking directions to expedite the certification process. As the delay stretched from weeks into months, the producers argued before the court that the prolonged wait had put the planned release in jeopardy. The legal intervention, however, did not immediately break the deadlock. After nearly a month and proceedings that reached the Supreme Court, KVN Productions eventually withdrew its petition and opted to send the film to the revising committee instead.

‘Jana Nayagan’ leak fueled the controversy

The controversy escalated further in April when a high-definition version of ‘Jana Nayagan’ surfaced online even before the film had received CBFC certification.Tamil Nadu Police later arrested multiple individuals in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor. During subsequent proceedings before the Madras High Court, prosecutors revealed that the pirated copy had reportedly been viewed by nearly 1.2 crore people before authorities succeeded in blocking access to it.Investigators alleged that the leaked version had been assembled using footage copied from an editing facility before being circulated on piracy websites. Meanwhile, speculation surrounding the film only intensified on social media.Only days ago, a forged CBFC certificate claiming that ‘Jana Nayagan’ had already been granted an A certificate went viral online. The X account that shared the document later admitted it was fabricated. It was subsequently discovered that the fake certificate had been created by modifying the censor certificate of Vijay’s ‘Leo’, further fuelling confusion among fans.Rumours regarding the release date also gathered momentum after overseas distributors hinted at a July 24 premiere. Other reports suggested the makers were considering a July 23 release depending on their final strategy. Canadian exhibitor York Cinemas had even announced a July 24 overseas release before KVN Productions made any official announcement. Now that the certification process has finally concluded, attention has shifted to KVN Productions, which is expected to formally announce the theatrical release date soon.Directed by H Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain. Widely regarded as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political career, the project has generated extraordinary anticipation, with its seven-month certification saga becoming one of the most talked-about episodes in recent Tamil cinema.
