Cheran elected South Indian Film Writers' Association president; defeats V.C. Guhanathan by a comfortable margin

Director Cheran has another feather in his cap now as he has been elected as the new president of the South Indian Film Writers’ Association. The filmmaker won the election conducted by the association in Chennai and gained the confidence of the majority of the voting members. His win heralds a new beginning for the writers’ body, which elected a new set of office-bearers to head the association for the term ahead.

Cheran defeats V.C. Guhanathan with a strong vote margin

The election, conducted at the Film Musicians’ Association Hall in Vadapalani, saw voting from 8 am to 4 pm. According to The Hindu, Cheran, representing the ‘Namma K. Bhagyaraj’ panel, defeated V.C. Guhanathan of the ‘Thiraikkathai Mannan K. Bhagyaraj’ panel in the race for the president’s post. Cheran got an impressive 279 votes out of 432 cast, and Guhanathan received 155 votes. The win confirmed Cheran as the new president of the South Indian Film Writers Association with a convincing margin.

Election sees healthy participation and team sweep

The election had spirited participation from the association members, who came out in large numbers to exercise their franchise. Besides the president’s post, elections were held for 21 posts, including vice presidents, general secretary, treasurer and joint secretaries. Cheran’s panel had a successful outing with Samuthirakani and Snekan also getting elected as vice presidents. There was a brief dispute over the voting rights of disqualified members before polling, but the election process ended peacefully before the counting of votes later in the evening.

Cheran continues balancing cinema and leadership responsibilities

The victory is expected to see Cheran taking up a bigger role to address screenwriters’ concerns and strengthen the association in the years to come. Besides his administrative work, the National Award-winning filmmaker is still active in Tamil cinema. Cheran is recognized for his ability to tell an emotionally charged story through movies such as ‘Autograph,’ ‘Thavamai Thavamirundhu,’ and ‘Pokkisham.’Throughout the years, Cheran has collaborated with actors including Sneha, Mallika, Parthiban, Padmapriya, Saranya Ponvannan, and technicians/musicians including Bharadwaj, Sabesh Murali, Ilaiyaraaja, among others.
