Bonnie Tyler undergoes emergency surgery in Portugal

Bonnie Tyler hospitalised after emergency surgery as singer recovers in Portugal after successful procedure

Bonnie Tyler, the Grammy-nominated singer behind one of the most iconic power ballads ever recorded, has been hospitalised after undergoing emergency surgery. The 74-year-old Welsh singer is currently recovering after the procedure, with her manager confirming that the operation was a success.”Bonnie has been admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” manager Matt Davis said in a statement to USA Today. “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Bonnie Tyler’s career

Born Gaynor Sullivan in Wales, Tyler first broke onto the international music scene in the late 1970s with tracks like ‘It’s a Heartache’ and ‘Lost in France’. She went on to cement her status as a global icon with hits including ‘Holding Out For a Hero’ and ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, which spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 following its release in July 1983.Her latest releases, ‘One World One Home’ and ‘Only Love’, both dropped in April, showing she remains as active as ever in her music career. In 2023, she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music during a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

What Bonnie Tyler said about her health before the hospitalisation

The news comes as something of a surprise given how positively Tyler had spoken about her health just months ago. In an interview with Hello! magazine published on March 2, she said she was “fit enough at the moment” and “really enjoying doing the shows.””I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything,” she told the outlet. “I do home Pilates, only 20 minutes a day, it’s something I can do in my hotel rooms.”She had noted at the time that the most pressing concern was the condition of her knees, though she had undergone what she described as a “very successful” washout procedure that she hoped would last for a long time.Tyler had international shows scheduled from May 22 through December, though it remains to be seen how her recovery will affect those commitments.
