Bharathiraja’s challenge that ended in triumph

From being pushed out of the studio premises to directing for AVM: Bharathiraja's challenge that ended in triumph

Bharathiraja’s demise has revived countless memories of his extraordinary journey in Tamil cinema. Bharathiraja is considered one of the best filmmakers in the industry. He directed more than 40 films and introduced many actors and actresses who became stars. He took Tamil cinema out of studio sets and put real villages, real people, and real emotions on the silver screen. For this effort, he won several awards, including six national awards and the Padma Shri. However, behind the success was a man who went through all phases of life, such as rejection, ridicule, and hard times, before making history.

When Bharathiraja was forced out of AVM Studios

Long before becoming a celebrated director, Bharathiraja was a young man with a dream of cinema. Years later, he delivered a speech recalling an incident in 1964 that strongly influenced him. As reported by News 18, he accompanied a friend to AVM Studios during a special screening of the film ‘Server Sundaram.’ Curious and excited, he entered the studio and sat down quietly to watch the film. However, someone questioned his presence and demanded to know who he was. When nobody could properly identify him, he was reportedly grabbed by his shirt and pushed out of the studio premises. The incident broke young Bharathiraja’s heart and embarrassed him.

A promise made in pain that changed his life

Instead of giving up, Bharathiraja turned that painful moment into motivation. He vowed it to himself while standing outside the studio gates. One day, he would return, not as an outsider, but as an honored filmmaker invited through the front door. His struggles made him work harder and be more determined. He kept his knowledge of films and learned from professionals in the field. Every setback increased his resolve and focus to succeed.

Years later, AVM invited him back as a successful director

Finally, Bharathiraja kept the promise he had made to himself. He went on to make a number of successful films and became one of the most respected directors in Tamil cinema. He was officially invited to work with AVM Productions. AVM made ‘Pudhumai Penn’ in 1984 with Bharathiraja as the director. He was a successful filmmaker now, and the studio that had thrown him out embraced him. This story is one of the most inspirational episodes of his life. Go to Source
