AR Rahman battled stage fright at his first concert

AR Rahman battled stage fright at his first concert in Malaysia after Roja success, recalls concert director: ‘Throughout the show, he remained reserved’

After the groundbreaking success of Roja in 1992, AR Rahman became a national sensation and a new voice in Indian music. By 1996, the maestro was invited to perform his first-ever concert in Malaysia at Stadium Shah Alam, a venue filled with over 40,000 eager fans. But while the audience waited with anticipation, Rahman was backstage, battling stage fright.AR Rahman backstage: Prayers before the spotlightDeepak Gattani, the concert director, recalled the dramatic moments leading up to Rahman’s entry. “This was Rahman’s first-ever concert. We had planned the entire show flow. The countdown began, and the crowd was going wild. I was at the console, asking, ‘Where is Rahman?’ But he was inside, praying,” he told O2 India. The tension grew when Rahman refused to step out. According to Gattani, a team member named Savio rushed backstage, only to return saying Rahman was unwilling to face the crowd. “Sir, he is not coming out. Rahman is stiff, saying he doesn’t want to go on stage,” Savio reported. Finally, it took a literal push to get Rahman onto the stage.

A shy smile and a historic momentWhen Rahman finally stepped under the spotlight, the crowd exploded with joy. The young composer stood shyly, eyes lowered, offering a faint smile before taking his position at the keyboard. “Throughout the show, he remained reserved. When you see him today, you realize what a huge transformation it has been,” Gattani shared. That night marked the beginning of Rahman’s legendary journey as a live performer, a side of him that fans across the world celebrate today.AR Rahman’s Dubai concert stampede in 1998Just two years later, Rahman’s popularity had skyrocketed to global levels. His 1998 Dubai concert drew such massive crowds that police had to use lathi charge to control a stampede-like situation. Nearly 5,000 fans were turned away, unable to enter the venue.
