Anupam Mittal sparks debate over 35% salary hike demand

Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal questions 35% salary hike demand leading to online debate: 'Ye standard kisne banaya?’

Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal often uses his different social media platforms for business mantras and more. Recently, he took to X (formerly called Twitter) and opined on the salary hike demanded by people. He mentioned people often seek a 35% hike in their salary, and cite it as a standard practice, which the Shaadi.com founder doesn’t agree with. His post went viral in no time, sparking an online debate. Read on to know more.

What did Anupam Mittal post about a salary hike?

Anupam Mittal posted about the “35% salary increment,” a benchmark demanded by job candidates during negotiations. Mimicking a typical hiring conversation, he wrote, “When can you join? In one month. Salary? 35% increment? Why 35%? Standard hai sir.” He then added, “WTF? Ye standard kisne banaya.”The post went viral with some people agreeing with Mittal, while others raised their concerns. Anupam then clarified below the original post, “The point that most of you geniuses missed is that there is an entitlement to some arbitrary standard. If a role deserves it, one should demand even 2x, why just 35%? Ultimately, the market decides.”

Online debate on salary hikes and increments

Stirring an online debate, people were left divided. Some argued even 35% is less, while others questioned on fixating on a set percentage, and not considering skill set, while negotiating during the hiring process. One X user asked, “Why can’t people ask for a higher increment when you can ask for higher equity all the time?” To this, Anupam Mittal replied: “They can ask for sure but market will determine what they get no?” The conversation didn’t end there, as the commentor added, “Surely. Giving that hike depends on the market, value-add, budget, and importance of the role. However, I believe asking for more is totally okay, if you can back it. Maybe ”standard hai” is not the way to go about it.” Another X post read, “What do you think makes sense to ask for in these situations? It is quite hard to quantify. Shouldn’t the HR team reaching out mention the salary they are ready to offer?”Anupam Mittal responded with the comment, “I think it should be a function of being paid in line with the role. Whether that’s 10%, 35% or 100%. Ultimately, market decides your value, not u so idea should be to maximise capabality. But one cannot ask for 35% coz it’s a ‘standard’. For me that’s a reject right away.”Another X user mentioned, “35% to kam bola… It is more than 50% these days. Nowadays, candidates are asking salary based on skill.” Agreeing to it, Anupma replied, “value (increment) should be commensurate with skill.”Meanwhile, one of the users cracked a joke and wrote, “Sir pichle round ke valuation se 35% premium to deserve karte hain, that’s VC standard.” Go to Source
