Sam Neill’s last interview: The actor’s final words about ‘Jurassic Park’, his life and more

In one of his last interviews before his passing, actor Sam Levine opened yo about hi life, his farm animals and how it was like to work on the sets of ‘Jurassic Park’

Sam Neill, best known for his work in the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise, passed away on July 13 at the age of 78. The news of his passing sent shockwaves across the film industry, with many people, including Anupam Kher, Karl Urban, the Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers, and others coming forward to remember and celebrate his life. Amidst all of this, one of his last interviews taken before h,is demise has resurfaced online. At the time, the actor opened up about his work on the hit science fiction franchise, how he would not like to star in the ‘James Bond’ series, and his life in general.

One of Sam Neill’s last interviews

During his conversations with The Guardian, the actor got candid about his life as an actor, his latest work, what it was like for him in ‘Jurassic Park’, and more. During the interview, the actor answered certain questions asked by fans, which included details about his role in The Piano as a “baddie.”The question read, “Do you enjoy playing the baddie, like you did in The Piano?” , to which the actor replied playfully by saying that, “Yes. I’d like to think that, in life, I’m a goodie, so the chance to play a baddie can be a lot of fun. I loved playing Major Campbell in Peaky Blinders because he had a very sad dimension, so I felt slightly sorry for him. But I don’t feel sorry for the other very influential bad guys in positions of power on the planet as we speak.”

Sam Neill on what he enjoyed the most in ‘Jurassic Park’

Neill had been asked to compare ‘Jurassic Park’ with ‘Dead Calm’ while also sharing what it was like to work with CGI. The actor shared that for its time, the science fiction film had quite a lot of assistance and that many of the dinosaurs shown in the film were handled by actual people. He shared, “On Jurassic Park, there was plenty to see – enormous puppet creatures built by Stan Winston. CGI was coming into its own, while animatronics had reached their zenith. The combination worked beautifully – you believe the puppets because of the CGI, and the CGI because of the puppets.” He also recounted a hilarious note at the time, referencing one of the scenes where the Tyrannosaurus rex ran after the children after breaking away from his cage.He recalled: “When he attacks the children through the sunroof of the Jurassic Park truck, there were dozens of people operating him. I was more concerned for the T-rex than for the children. Sometimes he’d lunge too far, hit the truck, half a dozen teeth would fall out, and we’d have to stand down for the dinosaur dentist to repair his fangs.”

Why Sam Neill named his animals after fellow actors

The actor also explained the reasoning behind naming many of his farm animals after his fellow actors and co-stars. Neill had been managing his own farm, growing his own crops along with many farm animals. While explaining the naming process, Neill commented, “Sometimes it’s to annoy people; sometimes to flatter them.” He further added that Helena Bonham Carter, best known for her work in ‘Fight Club’ and the ‘Harry Potter’ film franchise, was extremely happy with his choice. He also named his pig Amy Adams, after the award-winning ‘Arrival’ actress, while his rooster shared the name with Hollywood icon and ‘X-Men’ star, Michael Fassbender.

In March 2023, the star had his stories published under his own memoir, titled ‘Did I Ever Tell You This?’ Earlier this year, Neill confirmed that after shifting to immunotherapy, his body had been rid of cancer, and he was in remission. His family took to his Instagram account to share the news that the veteran star had passed away.
