Marathi actress Daya Dongre passes away; Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde mourns her demise

Veteran Marathi actress Daya Dongre, celebrated for her impactful roles in films, television, and theatre, has passed away at 85 due to age-related ailments. Dongre, who began her acting journey in her teens and studied at the National School of Drama, left an indelible mark on Maharashtra’s art world. Her contributions were recognized by the Government of Maharashtra.

Marathi actress Daya Dongre has passed away due to age-related issues. She was 85. The late actress worked in movies and TV shows and was known for her stellar career on stage as well.Born as Daya Modak on March 11, 1940, the actress started working during her teenage years. Reportedly, she even studied at the National School of Drama (NSD). Her marriage didn’t stop her from following her passion of acting. She starred in movies after marriage, like ‘Tuzhi Majhi Jodi Jamli Re’, ‘Nanda Saukhya Bhare’, ‘Yachasathi Kela Hota Atthahas’, and ‘Lekure Udand Jali’.Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde took to his social media to mourn the demise of the veteran actress. He wrote, “Extremely saddened to hear of the demise of veteran actress Daya Dongre, who created an indelible place in Marathi shows and the film industry with the power of her strong acting. An era of acting and art world in Maharashtra has ended. We all share the grief of their families and fans. May God grant eternal peace to his soul. A heartfelt tribute.”

More about Daya Dongre

Daya Dongre was born in Amravati, Maharashtra. She was born and brought up in the family of performers. Her mother, Yamunatai Madak, was an actress, and her aunt, Shanta Modak, was also a singer-actress. Daya gained popularity with an All India Radio singing competition. Later, she marked her theater debut at the age of 16 with the play titled ‘Rambha’. She studied at Pune’s Fergusson College and then joined the NSD. She left her studies because of her marriage; however, her husband, Sharad, never stopped her from acting entirely.
