More than two decades after the magic of ‘Lagaan’ captured audiences across the globe, actor Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker are reportedly joining hands once again for a grand period sports drama. The upcoming film is said to revolve around the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath and will be set during the emotionally charged era of the 1947 Indo-Pak partition.‘Lagaan’ continues to enjoy cult status in Indian cinema, and now the iconic actor-director duo is preparing to revisit the sports genre with another emotionally driven narrative. Sources close to the development revealed that the project has already entered an advanced scripting phase, with several reading sessions having taken place.According to Pinkvilla, reports suggest that the team is aggressively working on this story and the final draft also has creative inputs from the maverick duo Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. It’s an emotional, inspiring sports drama set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pak partition in 1947.Preparations for the film are reportedly underway on a large scale. The makers are said to be targeting the end of this year to begin production work, while principal photography is expected to commence around September 2026. According to reports, another prominent actor may soon be cast in a parallel lead role. Aamir Khan returns to cricket-based cinema

The film will mark Aamir Khan’s return to cricket-centric storytelling after the phenomenal success of ‘Lagaan’. The actor is reportedly thrilled to step back into the world of sports dramas, especially with a story rooted in history, emotion, and patriotism. Over the years, ‘Lagaan’ has remained one of Indian cinema’s most admired sports films, and expectations from this reunion are naturally soaring among fans.

Aamir Khan’s back-to-back films planned

Earlier, Aamir Khan had hinted in interviews that he would be working on three consecutive projects beginning in September 2026. Reports now suggest that the Lala Amarnath biopic will be the first among them to go on floors. After that, the actor is expected to collaborate with filmmaker Rahul Mody on a startup-based drama reportedly featuring Shraddha Kapoor.
