5 Odyssey adaptations to watch before Nolan’s film

5 'The Odyssey' adaptations to watch before Christopher Nolan's epic arrives in theatres

Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ has served as cinema’s ultimate storytelling blueprint for more than a century, inspiring generations of filmmakers with its timeless themes of adventure, survival and homecoming. Now the ancient epic is set to receive its most ambitious cinematic interpretation yet with Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi epic, backed by a remarkable ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o.Before audiences embark on Nolan’s voyage, here are five screen adaptations of ‘The Odyssey’ that are well worth revisiting.

1. ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ (2000)

Set in 1930s Mississippi, this Coen Brothers gem follows the vain and fast-talking Ulysses Everett McGill, played by George Clooney, who escapes a chain gang with his gullible crewmates Pete and Delmar under the pretence of finding hidden treasure. In reality, Everett is racing to stop his wife, Penny, from marrying someone else. Along the way, they accidentally become folk-radio stars, encounter three river Sirens, and are robbed by a one-eyed Bible salesman. The Coen Brothers famously claimed they never actually read ‘The Odyssey’, yet somehow built a hilarious and brilliant masterpiece around it. If you have not seen it yet, Amazon Prime Video is waiting.

2. ‘The Odyssey’ (1997)

This visually ambitious television miniseries remains one of the most faithful screen adaptations ever made. Starring Armand Assante as Odysseus, it follows his perilous ten-year journey home after the Trojan War, guided by the goddess Athena, played by Isabella Rossellini. Featuring elaborate sets, large-scale battles and fantasy elements that were impressive for television at the time, the series brought Homer’s epic to life for a new generation of viewers. The full miniseries is available to stream on YouTube for those ready to commit to the complete journey.

3. ‘Ulysses’ (1954)

One of the earliest major cinematic adaptations of ‘The Odyssey’, this Italian-American epic starred Kirk Douglas as Ulysses. After the Trojan War, the warrior king is cursed by the gods to wander the seas, eventually washing ashore with severe amnesia. As he slowly recovers his memory, he recalls encounters with the giant Cyclops Polyphemus and the sorceress Circe, while back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope stalls a palace full of suitors. Blending classical mythology with grand old-Hollywood spectacle, it became a landmark adventure film of the 1950s. A piece of cinematic history worth tracking down on Dailymotion.

4. ‘L’Odissea’ (1968)

Directed by Franco Rossi, this acclaimed Italian television miniseries is considered one of the most visually poetic and textually accurate adaptations of Homer’s epic ever produced. Rather than relying on fantasy spectacle, the series maintained a grounded and literary tone while faithfully recreating iconic episodes, including encounters with the Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens and Calypso. Widely praised for its performances and storytelling, it remains a definitive version of the tale. For purists who want Homer done right, this one lives on YouTube.

5. ‘Odysseus: Voyage to the Underworld’

This dark fantasy adaptation puts an action-heavy spin on ‘The Odyssey’. Starring Arnold Vosloo as Odysseus, the film begins after the Trojan War when the legendary warrior and his men become trapped on a mysterious island ruled by dark supernatural forces. Unlike traditional adaptations, this version leans heavily into horror and mythological fantasy, turning the journey into a battle against monstrous creatures, curses and the terrifying underworld itself. For those who like their mythology with a darker edge, it is available on Dailymotion.Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ arrives in July 2026. Go to Source
