‘3 Idiots’ sequel delayed as Aamir Khan focuses on Lala Amarnath biographical drama

‘3 Idiots’ sequel faces delay as Aamir Khan focuses on Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lala Amarnath biographical drama

Aamir Khan has finally decided which project will go on floors next. The actor has reportedly locked dates for Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama based on the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series, pushing the much-awaited sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ further down the line. The Rajkumar Hirani directorial is now expected to begin sometime around mid-2027.

Why did Aamir Khan chose the cricket drama first?

According to reports by Variety India, Aamir had been considering both films as his immediate next venture. However, the Ashutosh Gowariker project eventually moved ahead because the script was already complete and ready for execution. The film, which revolves around legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath, has reportedly entered full-fledged pre-production. Shooting is expected to commence around October or November 2026.While preliminary planning had already begun quietly, the makers are now accelerating the process with casting and technical recce preparations officially underway.

Farhan Akhtar joins the film in a key role

The sports drama will also feature Farhan Akhtar in an important character. Apart from acting in the film, Farhan is also backing the project under the Excel Entertainment banner alongside Ritesh Sidhwani. Reports suggest Farhan will portray one among four close companions of Aamir Khan’s character, Lala Amarnath. Interestingly, both actors are expected to undergo rigorous cricket coaching sessions before the shoot begins to authentically portray the sports drama on screen.

‘3 Idiots’ sequel delayed due to script concerns

According to reports, the primary reason behind postponing the sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ is the screenplay still being under development. Although Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi have already finalised the core idea, the screenplay and dialogues are reportedly not at the level Aamir Khan expects yet. Reports claim that multiple drafts have already been written, but the actor remains unconvinced and has requested another rewrite before officially committing to the film. Aamir is known for taking an extremely meticulous approach toward scripts and prefers thoroughly refined screenplays before beginning production.

Aamir Khan’s history of waiting for the right script

The actor’s perfectionist reputation within the industry is no secret. Reports suggest that even the ambitious Dadasaheb Phalke biopic planned with Rajkumar Hirani was eventually shelved because the makers could not crack a screenplay strong enough to justify the subject. This time too, both Aamir and Hirani reportedly agreed that delaying the ‘3 Idiots’ sequel would be a smarter move rather than rushing a project that already carries massive audience expectations.

Rajkumar Hirani still attached to the Lala Amarnath film

Despite the delay of ‘3 Idiots’, Rajkumar Hirani remains closely associated with Aamir Khan’s upcoming cricket-based drama. The filmmaker is believed to be co-producing the project alongside Excel Entertainment. With Ashutosh Gowariker directing and a historical cricket backdrop at its centre, the film is shaping up to be one of Aamir Khan’s most ambitious projects in recent years. Go to Source
