A Russian drone strike hit a passenger train at a station in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region on Saturday, injuring around 30 people, news agency Reuters reported citing officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the attack a “savage Russian drone strike” on Telegram, posting video of a burning carriage and other train cars with shattered windows. “All emergency services are on the scene and helping people,” he said.
“The Russians could not have been unaware that they were striking civilians. And this is terror the world must not ignore,” Zelenskiy added. “Every day Russia takes people’s lives. Only strength can make them stop. Strong action is needed — lip service is not enough now.”
Sumy regional governor Oleh Hryhorov said the strike targeted a train travelling from Shostka to Kyiv. Medics and rescuers were working at the scene. The head of the local district administration, Oksana Tarasiuk, confirmed about 30 people were injured, with no immediate reports of fatalities.
Moscow has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, hitting stations and trains almost daily over the past two months.
