Germany arrests 3 suspected Hamas operatives over planned attacks on Jewish, Israeli sites

The individuals, described as “foreign operatives” of Hamas, were allegedly involved in acquiring firearms and ammunition for the organisation within Germany, according to a report, citing a statement from the prosecutors

German federal prosecutors on Wednesday announced the arrest of three suspected members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Berlin on Wednesday, alleging they were planning attacks on Jewish and Israeli sites.

The individuals, described as “foreign operatives” of Hamas, were allegedly involved in acquiring firearms and ammunition for the organisation within Germany, according to an AFP report, citing a statement from the prosecutors.

During the arrests, authorities seized an AK-47 assault rifle, several pistols, and a “considerable amount” of ammunition. Investigations are ongoing.

“The weapons were to be used by Hamas for deadly attacks targeting Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany,” read the statement.

According to news outlet Der Spiegel, German authorities carried out coordinated raids in Berlin, Leipzig, and Oberhausen as part of an operation that led to the arrest of three suspected Hamas operatives accused of planning attacks on Jewish and Israeli sites.

Federal prosecutors said the suspects are being investigated for membership in a foreign terrorist organisation and for preparing “a serious act of violence endangering the state.”

Two of the suspects were partially identified as German nationals Abed Al G. and Ahmad I.

The third, Wael F. M., was described as “Lebanese-born,” with his nationality still under review by authorities. All three are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Germany classifies Hamas as a terrorist organisation, and both the group and its affiliates are banned from operating in the country.
