Manchester United set sights on World Cup-winner Emiliano Martinez to solve goalkeeping woes ahead of transfer deadline

With Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana guilty of committing errors in the matches that Manchester United have played so far this season, the ‘Red Devils’ are reportedly keen on a last-minute signing of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

Manchester United have splurged more than £200 million in signings this summer, and are by no means done just yet. The ‘Red Devils’, who are eyeing a complete overhaul in the 2025-26 season after finishing an abysmal 15th on the table last season, are reportedly still on the lookout for a goalkeeper, with their gaze currently on Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

United have also been locked in negotiations with Royal Antwerp on signing 23-year-old Belgian Senne Lammens, who is reportedly eager to shift base to Old Trafford and has also been left out of the five-time Belgian top-flight champions in their last two fixtures.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

What Lammens lacks though is experience, which is the reason why United also have their sights set on 32-year-old Martinez, who was part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning Argentina side and is also a two-time FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year, besides having nearly 200 Premier League appearances under his belt.

Why United would be keen to look past Bayindir and Onana

Manager Ruben Amorim has so far included Turkish keeper Altay Bayindir in all three league games that United have played this season while Cameroonian Andre Onana had featured in the League Cup second round fixture against Grimsby Town.

Both Bayindir and Onana have been guilty of committing errors so far this season, with the former’s blunder resulting in a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the season-opener on 17 August.

“I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment,” Amorim had said following United’s 3-2 victory over Burnley, their first win of the ongoing season.

Veteran English keeper Tom Heaton is also part of the squad, but it remains to be seen if the Portuguese manager will include the 39-year-old ahead of Bayindir and Onana.

Hence, bringing in a fresh face as the first-choice keeper would ideally be the route United would want to go down in the remaining hours of the summer transfer window.
