Manchester United eye young midfielder to support Bruno Fernandes in new role

Manchester United are looking to strengthen their midfield before the summer transfer window closes. The club has already improved their attack with new signings but remain keen on adding a ball-winning midfielder to support Bruno Fernandes. They are reportedly eyeing a 21-year-old player, who was impressive last season.

Manchester United have not been at their best for the past few seasons, and the appointment of Ruben Amorim appears to have changed nothing. The Portuguese manager has already lost 15 of his first 28 Premier League games in charge of the Red Devils. However, they are trying to improve things and boost their attack with new signings this year.

United have already signed Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Diego Leon. Amorim has focused on fixing the scoring problem this season. But one area still needs attention, which is the midfield. Reports suggest that the Old Trafford side has asked Chelsea about Brazilian youngster Andrey Santos as they are looking at him to assist captain Bruno Fernandes in the middle.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Strasbourg and impressed with his tackling and passing. He has been described as a “monster” in midfield because of his ability to win the ball and start attacks. Amorim used Bruno in a deeper role in the opening game against Arsenal, and United believe a ball-winning midfielder next to him could help the team.

United will hope a deal can be done before the transfer window closes on September 1. However, Chelsea may not be ready to sell Santos yet. He played 32 games and contributed 13 goals and assists last season. As per FBref, Santos had a pass accuracy rate of 88 percent, while he averaged 4.7 progressive passes and 1.3 passes into the final third per game.

Meanwhile, other reports claim that VfB Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, and Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana are also on United’s shortlist in this window. However, the club will have to move quickly in these reported talks, as the deadline for the summer transfer window is fast approaching.
