Manchester United eye former Chelsea star as transfer deadline nears

After a shaky start to the season, Manchester United want to strengthen their team and are looking for last-minute signings before the summer transfer window closes on September 1. Ruben Amorim is trying to fix gaps in the squad that is causing them the trouble. They are reportedly eyeing former Chelsea star who could partner with Bruno Fernandes in the midfield.

Manchester United have suffered another poor start to their Premier League season despite their recent win over Burnley on Saturday, August 30. United head coach Ruben Amorim finally got some relief as Bruno Fernandes scored in added time to help register a 3-2 victory in what could have been a draw.

However, it is clear that the team still has many problems to fix and they will aim to do it on the final two days of the summer transfer window. Manchester United have already signed four players in the ongoing window, including Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Diego Leon.

Conor Gallagher may return to Premier League again

According to CaughtOffside, United are looking at former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is now at Atletico Madrid. The Spanish club is reportedly ready to sell him for around £45 million (nearly Rs 400 crore). But Manchester United are not the only club interested in the 25-year-old. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are also in the race.

“The club see Gallagher as a perfect fit … Spurs are preparing a bid in the region of £35–40 million,” the report quoted a source as saying. Gallagher will be expected to partner with Fernandes in the midfield and provide him support.

More from Football

Gallagher joined Atletico Madrid last summer after leaving Chelsea. However, things haven’t gone smoothly for him in Spain as he scored just four goals in 50 matches across competitions in the 2024-25 season. It now appears that Atletico are ready to let the England international go.

Meanwhile, Gallagher was a different player at Chelsea, where he impressed with his performances. He even captained the Blues under Mauricio Pochettino in a 2-1 EFL Cup victory in the 2023-24 season. However, Chelsea opened talks for his transfer in July 2024 as it was reported that their new manager Enzo Maresca doesn’t see him as a regular starter.

But bringing him to Old Trafford could go either way. It might work out well, or it could be a big failure because Gallagher has not played as good in Spain as he did under Pochettino in the Premier League. It will be hard for him to replicate the same form at a club that is already struggling to find rhythm.
