Man United manager Amorim blasts his players as he clarifies stance on quitting the club: ‘We need to have more personality’

A furious Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim did not hold back as he blasted his players after the defeat to Brentford and also clarified his stance on leaving the club.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is once again facing the questions regarding his position at the club as clamour for his sacking grows. Amorim has only managed to accumulate 34 points from 33 Premier League games since his appointment last November, as on Saturday, United suffered a shocking 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

United were 2-0 down by the 20th minute as Igor Thiago raced to a brace early on, only for Benjamin Sesko to pull one back for the Red Devils at the Gtech Community Stadium. And while Man United might be hoping to salvage at least one point by the end, a Mathias Jensen goal in the fifth minute of the final injury time condemned the visitors to an embarrassing defeat.

Amorim stays defiant despite latest setback

Man United were coming into the match after a 2-1 win over Chelsea, but failed to maintain the momentum. However, Amorim is defiant, saying he’s doing the best for the club.

“I’m always doing my job,” said Amorim. “If I win, I’m in a different state of mind. That is normal, but I’m always confident, because I know what to do. It’s my job and I’m not here just to protect the players.

“I’m trying to do what is best for the club and the team. But that is the pressure of the club. So I’m just thinking what is the best way to win the next game. I’m not trying to protect the players or myself. I’m just trying to win the next game, create momentum.

“I try to be really objective in my analysis of the game. Today we played Brentford’s game, not our own game. And when you play the opponent’s game, it’s harder to win.”

Amorim also blasted his players for lacking personality on the pitch as they fell into Brentford’s traps and didn’t put in their best effort.

“When we win, it’s not the system, when we lose it’s the system. I understand that. I think it’s more that we play this game like Brentford wanted to play this game.

“We never settled down to play our game. We never pushed the opponent. We knew that every time they recovered the ball, they would make a run and they would fight for the ball. We need to work on a lot of things.

“My biggest concern is that we didn’t settle down in the game. In the final third we missed a lot of crosses. That’s frustrating. We can do better with the ball. We can have more control. We can understand that sometimes when the decisions are not in your favour, the momentum is not in your favour, we can still control the ball.

“When everything, the moments, the penalty, the foul before the first goal, all these things are against us, we need to have more personality to control the game and calm down the game.”

The Portuguese tactician added that United will need to make a fresh start after the latest setback.

“When you win, you feel that everything, the momentum, is here. When you lose, you go back to the same place and you fight again for the one win that can help you to create the momentum.”
