Man United could still lose star defender to Saudi Pro League despite transfer window shutting down

Despite the transfer window shutting in England, Manchester United could still sell a defender as two Saudi Arabian clubs have made an offer to them.

Manchester United could still lose a star player despite the transfer window in England coming to a halt, as former captain Harry Maguire is being linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. The transfer window in the Saudi Pro League is still open until 23 September, which means United can still sell Maguire to a Saudi club if an agreement is reached.

As per The Sun, two Saudi Pro League clubs have approached Man United to sign Harry Maguire, but face resistance from the England defender. While Maguire isn’t a first-choice anymore at United, he has experienced a sort of revival under manager Ruben Amorim and was added to a six-man leadership group at the club in August.

Will Harry Maguire leave Man United for Saudi trip?

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Maguire reportedly wants to stay at United during the ongoing season and will only consider a move to Saudi Arabia at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. His contract with United ends next summer, so the ball is now in the Red Devils’ court.

They can hold onto him or sell him now to make some extra money. But we need to remember that United reportedly rejected offers for Maguire from multiple English Premier League and Italian Serie A clubs earlier this year.

Turkish club Galatasaray and Ligue 1 sides Monaco and Marseille also showed interest in signing Maguire, as per reports.

The 32-year-old defender has played 249 matches for United since joining the Old Trafford team in a record £80 million deal from Leicester City in 2019.

He was also close to joining West Ham two years ago, but that deal never materialised.

Former West Ham defender James Tomkins recently said that the London club would love to have a player like Maguire.

“I think someone like West Ham would probably suit him,” Tomkins told Boyle Sports. “And I think it would be a good acquisition for the team. They need someone there to steady it a little at the back.

“The Premier League experience, that counts for a lot. It’s very important that West Ham don’t just look at players that have not played in the Premier League.”
