India vs Afghanistan football: Blue Tigers seek redemption after Iran defeat; live streaming, head-to-head

Indian football team has a chance of qualifying to the next round in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 with a strong show against Afghanistan on Thursday as they aim to script a comeback after losing badly to Iran.

The battered and bruised Indian football team takes on Afghanistan on Thursday in its final group match of the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup, with the qualification to the third-place match on the line. A rare defeat for Iran could propel India to the winner’s final, but 20th-ranked Team Melli is expected to convincingly beat Tajikistan in their last group game.

In such a scenario, India, who lost 3-0 to Iran, can only finish as the second team in the group with a win over Afghanistan, qualifying for the third-place match. A draw may also prove to be enough, but 133rd-ranked India would want to beat Afghanistan and avoid any last-minute drama.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

India have a strong head-to-head record against 161st Afghanistan, having beaten them 13 times in 22 matches. Seven matches ended in a draw while Afghanistan have only two wins to show. But they won their last match against India, 2-1 in Guwahati in March 2024.

India’s last victory over Afghanistan came three years ago when they secured a 2-1 win in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in Kolkata.

But the Blue Tigers under Khalid Jamil have shown great courage, beating Tajikistan after a long time in their tournament opener. Against Iran as well, they played some good football, but errors resulted in a drubbing.
